When you first turn on the Frig on the boat it trips the breaker, the mechanic says you must 1st turn the temp selector to 0 posistion then turn the breaker on, then turn the temp posistion to desired coldness. When done trhis way it does not trip. My question is this correcxt or is it masking a problem?

Re: Refrigerator

Refrigerators have a very high starting current. When you start everything at once that surge is even higher. By starting in stages you reduce the peak surge that is tripping the breaker.

1. Your wiring and circuit should be designed to handle the surge. It could be your wiring is undersized.

2. The other possibility is that as motors age they can have problems that cause it to draw more current, especially to get started. This could cause it to pop the breaker.

3. Low voltage can wreck havoc with motors, especially on start up. The lower the voltage the higher the current, and this may be popping your breaker. (When you draw a lot of current you run into problems with voltage drop in the wires and connections.)

Suggestions:
1. What is the size of the breaker?
2. Do you have the current draw rating for the unit? See if there is a rating for startup current.
3. Check the wiring. Is everything tight?
4. If you have a voltmeter and can measure the voltage near the unit, what is it?

BTW - I forgot to ask are you running this on 12v or 120v when the breker blows? (shore power or battery?)

What is

Re: Refrigerator

Jack L makes alot of good points. We defintely need to know the size of the breaker. Also how many breakers are in the boat? Mine had two one for the three outlets on the starboard side of the boat and another for the one outlet on the port side. This caused alot of headaches during the re-modeling of the boat, mainly because I had to go back and re-wire alot of the 110 side of it. Now it is 2 breakers divided evenly with two outlets apiece.

Also what happens when you run it off of the 12v portion? I know mine "COOLMATIC" built in runs cooler of the 110 side, seems to cycle alot on the 12v.
