Refueling question

Have an 89 Sea Ray I/O. I refuel the boat at a local gas station. My problem is it takes so long to fill. If I try to pump the gas faster it bubbles up and the fuel comes back out the filler hole.

Is there anything I can check to see why this happens, or, is this the way it goes with filling a boat fuel tank?

Re: Refueling question

On many boats it depends on where the tank is located. If tucked away in the floor the fill tube may have a long curvey travel to get there, and the more sharp bends it has the more fuel can back up in the line. The original tank in my Islander was a pain to fill, when the boat was refreshed the original steel tank was replaced with an alum tank and repositioned to give a straighter run for the fill tube. It now fills much faster than before, but still not as fast as a car due to the longer run for the fill tube. Many autos have a larger fill tubes as they are a direct route to the tank, whereas a boat uses a smaller dia tube to squeeze thru the cramped confines of interior walls. Hope this gives you some sort of explanation.

Thanks, I will check the vent line for blockage or kinks. It is in the floor so I may just have to fill it slowly.

My 25 gallon tank in floor does the same thing..

I just take my time and listen for the gurlgle, then i know when to stop... Otherwise it comes out the fill tube.
