reg/rec test

Motor is 1995 70 hp evinrude.Problem symptom is volt meter guage in boat stays at 12v or slightly under while running at any speed.Tach intermittedly drops from 6000 to 5500.I suspect reg/rec as culprit.
Question:Is there a method of testing this unit with conventional multi meter?
The reg/rec has the following wires exiting case:
yellow,yellow w/gray stripe,purple,gray,and red.P/N 585001 20 amp
Manual that I have doesn't touch on any test procedure. As far as I understand the two yellows are a/c input, gray is tach, red is d/c output, and (purple is switched 12v?)
Hope this is clear.Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: reg/rec test

To verify if charging circuit is OK, measure voltage across battery terminals w/ engine running; should get 13.5 to 14.5 VDC. If you have a decent AC voltage from stator to regulator/rectifier (you need to a manual for the voltage of your specific motor) and there is no charging from the reg/rectifier, then the reg/rectifier probably needs to be replaced (assuming the wiring and connections are all OK).

Re: reg/rec test

Tach is usually the first indication that the reg/rectifier is bad. Check for ac at the yellow wires. If its their replace the regulator/rectifier.

Re: reg/rec test

Results of test are as follows:
13.5 volts at battery poles while idling at 1000 rpm on muffs.
13.5 volts(no change) at battery poles engine stopped.
13.5 volts at reg/rec red wire on terminal board while running at idle on muffs.
Did not perform inline amp reading on reg/rec red wire to red wire harness at starter solenoid yet.

19 volts a/c at the two yellow leads from stator.

I was in question as to the 13.5 volt reading I was getting with my meter at the battery poles when engine was not running, however when volt meter was hooked to the leads on a 12v battery charger the voltage read 12v in the 2amp setting and 12.5 v in the 6 amp setting. Also read 13.5 v at the boats voltage guage terminals while running or just with key on.
Now I can't figure whether the boats voltage guage is not working or there still may be a problem with the reg/rec.The voltage guage in boat at no time during test reads above 12volts.Use to read between 13.5 and 14 volts while running at all speeds.
Ps ,checked and tightened all ground connections at engine block, all connections on battery posts,And all connections on guages and ignition switch.

Re: reg/rec test

Re-Read your post. Have you charged your battery lately? (Your voltage has gone up). Put a load on the battery system for awhile and see if the voltage drops. Then re-check. Does the voltage stay where it was before and after cranking the engine? If so Replace the reg/rectifier.

Always check voltage at above idle.....around 1500RPM.

Re: reg/rec test

Trent,Don't ask how,but I just went out and did a amperage check again on red wire from reg/rec with motor running and I got zero, nada, zilch. It seems my mental retardation caused me to have the other red wire on terminal post in line with my test instead of removing it where I would not be reading battery amperage and just the dc output of the reg/rec.Now all I have to do is see clear to reach deeply into my pockets for the 191.00 + tax for the new one. Thanks to your input ,rickdb1boat's test procedures and WildeOnes logic I should be back up in no time and be "none the wiser" in finding future charging problems.

Re: reg/rec test

Just installed new reg/rec on motor and while running on muffs, same thing .12volts at volt guage and on battery .No change running or not.Guess problem must be in stator despite the 18 volts a/c it is putting out?Checked each yellow lead from stator again while running at idle, this time in the d/c volt scale and am getting 6.5 volts on each wire to ground.

Re: reg/rec test

Hey OB, should'nt that stator output be more like 150 Volts??

Re: reg/rec test

I don't believe on this one ,because the two yellow wires coming off of mine are just from the charge coils.Dealer wrench and several other people said 18-20 volts A/C to reg/rec.Another tech at a local shop said to check yellow wires while running, in d/c volt scale to ground. He said typical would be 6.5 volts on each leg and that's exactly what it's reading.

Re: reg/rec test

Rick, haven't removed flywheel to inspect, however looking underneath between stator and magnets there is indication of rub marks on starboard side only,Weird thing is when I rotate flywheel by hand while looking at magnet clearance doesn't seem like it would rub.Next I suspect upper bearing but moving flywheel for and aft by hand doesn't seem as if any detectable play is present.Gotta be something there though, or the rub marks wouldn't be there.

Re: reg/rec test

Update on rub marks. These marks that look like rub marks now as I look closer can't be the magnets rubbing as they are visible up to 3/8 inch below where magets ride around stator.I can get a .020 feeler guage 360 around flywheel between stator and magnets ,so there probably isn't a rub.Back to square one

Re: reg/rec test

Have you checked out this site:

Visually check the stator, trigger and flywheel: Cracks, burned marks and bubbling on the stator or trigger indicate a severe problem. If the stator shows bubbling around the battery charge windings, more than likely you will have to replace the rectifier/regulator in addition to the stator. Signs of rubbing on the flywheel usually indicate a bad upper or lower bearing. Check both the outer trigger magnets for signs of cracking and to be sure that they are not loose.

web page

Re: reg/rec test

Thanks for posting Rick.Yes, I've been to that website and it has a lot of good info .According to it's chart data for my year model 70hp with 6amp charge coil ,it says the charge coil output is 150 volts(contrary to what the dealer said at 18-20). It also states that the resistance figures for charge coil are between 360-440 ohms.I'm going to have to remove flywheel tomorrow and do a visual.Earlier not knowing what the resistance figures would be for the charge coils two yellow wires coming from stator I disconnected them from terminal block and ohmed them anyway. What I found seems like it is cause for thinking the charge coils of the stator may be shorted.I was using an ohm meter in the Rx1 scale and reading across the two yellow wires from stator it pegs the needle almost to 0.(as in no resistance)and reads 1/2 ohm resistance. I wouldn't think this is normal however I can't be sure without some expert advise.I've ordered a differnt manual that is factory and should be more detailed in electrical problem solving.Any and all input is welcomed.

Re: reg/rec test

OB, The resistance reading across the Stator should be 1.4 OHMS +/- 0.1 OHMS. (Factory Manual Specs) Also check Stator for Ground condition on both leads. I'm betting that the low Ohm's reading your getting across the stator relates to a winding problem, although it is not totally "Open".

Re: reg/rec test

If the 1.4 ohms + or- is correct then perhaps that is the problem since it's reading .5 ohms across yellow leads.Reading infinity to ground in Rx 1000 on yellow leads. You meant that the .5 ohm reading was not totatly "closed" not open, right?

Re: reg/rec test

Little play on words there! Yes, Closed. But yet, not reading infinity, so it is not an open winding, which is what I think I was trying to say ??? HHUUMM. Never the less, it should definitly read 1.4 Ohms + or -.

Re: reg/rec test

Update on reg/rec assy.Brought rig by shop this morning and let tech check out charging system.Long story short.New reg/rec tested bad out of the box.Installed second new one and everything is AOK.Dealer is going to send faulty one back to manufacturer.
