She was great on the water, thanks for all the advice from the forum on what to look for on the sea trial.

I am going to put an offer in tomorrow, what should I shoot him. $14500 is what they are asking without the trailer. NADA value puts the boat at $121oo without a trailer. The boat is in fantastic condition, looks almost new. No major scratches, interior is immaculate, motor is clean and runs well.

Any thoughts?

Glad to hear it went well. I would aim low on the offer. There's plenty of nice boats on the market. That said, if it's truly a cream puff, and will suit your needs for years to come, don't be afrraid to pay NADA average retail if the owner balks. I think well-maintained boats, that show pride of ownership, at retail price, are a better deal than poorly maintained boats at bargain prices.

I agree. After adding the bimini top and some other things that I left out when plugging the numbers into NADA it spit out $13900. He wants $2500 for the trailer.

I think I will give him full price but throw in the trailer.

That is wacky selling a boat without a trailer included in the price. That looks like a heavy boat for only 240 hp.Make sure you are happy with its performance. Those NADAs are just a guideline.Im pretty sure there arent a bunch of people lined up with 14 grand in this economy.A little dialogue (BSing) with the seller will tell you how bad he wants to sell.Be patient, there are a lot of boats out there.True,600 hrs shouldnt be a hindrance when you are buying at this time.I guarantee it will be a hindrance once you go to sell it with say 1000 hrs on it in the future.By this time i take it you have already made an offer.Just be very sure before hand him the cash. Its a simple fact really:There are a LOT of people right now that are in a bind and need to unload depreciating assets (boats) right now. There are very few buyers of these assets.Use this to your fullest advantage.

Rule #1 for negotiating: Leave room to negotiate. You NEVER know a seller's true motivation. Maybe the boat is paid off, but he's three payments behind on his mortgage . . .

In this market, I'd start low. You can always increase your offer. If the boat's been on the market for anything longer than a week then it's a sign that offers are going to be few and slow in coming in this economy.

In my area, I'd be tempted to start at 11,500 with trailer, then offer 11,750, then 11,800. Then stop. Tell him to call you if he changes his mind.

Now is not the time to be overpaying, boats depreciate very quickly these days. The classified ads are FULL of guys desperately trying to get what they thought their boat was worth 2 years ago and mentally they cannot accept that the situation with recreational assets has changed dramatically. I've seen one guy list the same Trophy boat for 2 years for about 10 grand more than it's really worth, it's sad, the text to his listing becomes more and more frustrated and desperate. It's obvious to me that he bought it on the old installment plan and now he cannot accept the reality that he's upside down on it even though the payments continue.
