Registering a trailer in Canada

Hey all!

Has anyone on here registered a boat trailer as a homebuilt in Canada? My GF has a boat and trailer left over from a split a few years back and hasn't yet transfered ownership of either from her ex. She has the boat ownership signed over so that should be ok but she doesn't have any bill of sale for the trailer. She doesn't even think that her ex ever registered the trailer in his name either when he bought the boat/trailer combo used.

I spoke very briefly to somone at the MOT and they have lead me to believe that no bill of sale for the trailer will be a major problem so my thought is to go in and register it as a homebuilt. Apparently you can do that with a trailer that has no VIN # and it is supposed to be just a matter of filing out a form. Has anyone done this? If so, what information will I need?

TIA

I recently registered a home-built boat trailer. Went to DMV and got a serial number plate which I attached to the trailer. I then took the trailer to the local RCMP detachment and had an officer look at the trailer and sign off on the registration form which DMV had given me with the serial number plate. Took the paper work back to DMV and they issued a plate and the ownership papers.

i did that last year . i went into the dmv where i live and told them i built myself a boat trailor . the only thing she wanted to know was how much it weighed . i told her 200 pounds and walked out with a licence plate and a ownership for a home made trailor ..

Re: Registering a trailer in Canada

rbh I'm in Ottawa. I kept the conversation with the MTO person rather brief as I just finished giving her the truthful scenario of my situation, so when she said that I would have potential problems I quickly asked about the homebuilt option. I just don't want to go through all kinds of hassle for an old trailer that isn't worth much. On the other hand it's worth enough not to just scrap because of a registration issue and my GF did come by it honestly so it's not like I'm trying to be deceptive with the MTO for bad reasons. I just want to avoid major hassle. The girl at the MTO office did say that there wasn't any inspection requirement. HondaPower what province are you in to have had to have the RCMP inspect your trailer? Is there that much difference between provinces?

It is very easy I just registered a boat trailer as a home built. I did mine at the Orleans branch in Ottawa very easy. You will need the weight of the trailer without the boat on it and color. I estimated that mine weighed about 200 lbs. The cost is $30.00.

Good morning-
here in BC we have a register of vehicles, we get a hold of them, pay the fee, and they issue you a new vin number. You may have to get an inspection.

Perfect! If hidef had no issues in Orleans it should be straight forward enough. Thanks for the info guys! Much appreciated!

As far as I know you can register it as home built with the weight and number of axles and that's about it in Ontario. They just want your money for the registration !!!!

I went to the DMV here in Newfoundland to register a home made trailer and all they wanted to know was how wide and long it was. Walked out after 5 minutes and 38 dollars later.

My old EZ Loader had a fader plate and the serial number was illegible. MTO registered it as home built without an issue.

I guess it is just Nova Scotia that requires the inspection by a police officer. The mounties I am sure have better things to do. This province nickles and dimes you to death, if it were not for the great salt water fishing I would move.
