Are all motors with just rectifiers, as opposed to regulator/rectifiers, unregulated charging systems? Such as my 91' 70 rude??

Re: Regulated or Unregulated

The motors with just rectifiers have low amp ratings. Under 10.

My '89 40 Johnson is 4 amp unregulated.

Re: Regulated or Unregulated

Thanks for the replys, guys. I was just curious if all motors with recifier systems on OMC's were unregulated. I know my other motor(89' 28 HP Johnson) is 4 Amp unregulated. Just wondered if they all were...

Ed, my 93 Evinrude 40 has an aluminum finned device about 2"x3" on the starboard side of the motor that I believe is a regulator. Does yours have that? The reason I ask is I am trying to determine if mine is the 4amp unregulated or 12amp regulated charging system.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Regulated or Unregulated

Rick,

Thanks for posting that pic! I don't have power tilt & trim, and my electrical components to the rear of the throttle linkage are totally different from yours. I do NOT have a rectifier, and my power pack is mounted horizontally below the level of the cowel(sp?) and my terminal strip is mounted horizontal also. The coils are mounted at the very rear. Where your trim relays are is where my regulator (i believe) is. Throttle linkage is also different.

So that means I have the 12 amp regulated charging system, and should be using the 6P setting, right?

Thanks again, Mark.

Mark 42,

Your "finned device" is the 12 amp regulator. Use the 6 pole setting. Be sure to get rid of the battery wing nuts and use the recommended lockwashers and hex nuts (stainless) to fasten the battery cables.

Re: Regulated or Unregulated

To be honest, I really don't know if yours uses the 5 or 6 pole setting. I know what yours looks like, but that does not help my advice. My 89' 28 HP used the 6 pole setting. Go figure!! There has been an ongoing post about this, as you may have seen. Check it out if you have not seen it. I would think the 6 setting on yours would be correct, though.. I do know that Joe Reeves, who has been as OMC mech. for over 30 years, said to use the 6 pole setting and that is good enough for me..

web page

Thanks Seahorse and Rick,

The OMC manual indicates 6p, so I will stay with that for now. It is the rpm limit in the power pack spec that is throwing me off. OMC says 6700 rpm, but I break up at 5700 or 5800. So I thought something is wrong.

And what is wrong with the wing nuts? Not a good enough contact for the higher amperage charge?

Mark.

Re: Regulated or Unregulated

The 6700 RPM pack will not allow the motor to rev over that point, so it doesn't blow up. The wing nuts do not, in many cases, give good contact at the battery. I believe this is because many people do not tighten them properly, as where you would tend to do with the hex nuts..

BTW- 5700-5800 RPM's is right where you want to be at WOT...

Mark,

What do you mean with break-up? If you're just in the water with the boat, and you can't reach higher then 5700 rpm, that might be because the engine/boat combination, the prop, the setup of the outboard and the load in the boat, doesn't permit more rpm's at WOT. In you're case it looks fine.
The rev. limiter has a different purpose. It prevents damage on your engine caused by f.i. a runaway condition while running on muffs (not on a load), blowout/ventilation of your prop while boating, that kind of things.

EDIT: (sorry, saw later I rementioned some things rickdb1boat said earlier)

Re: Regulated or Unregulated

Corb,

What I mean is that the motor acts as if the ignition is being cut off at that speed. It's not a problem with the prop. At WOT from a stand still start, the RPM will climb quickly right up to about 5700-5800 and then it loses power, back off the throttle a bit and it runs fine at a lower rpm.

Because I can't run wot at all without losing power at 5800 rpm, I have bought a larger pitch prop, going from a 13 pitch to a 15 pitch. OMC lists the wot operating rpm as between 4500 and 5500 for my year 40. I have not had a chance to test the new prop.

Mark
