I have a 1989 Force 85 HP outboard. Because the electrical system only has a rectifier and not a regulator the voltage is as high as 17 or 18 volts at around 4000 rpm. I did not realize this until I added a depth finder that also displayed voltage. I went to a local shop that services snowmobiles and ATVs. I ordered a Universal Regulator (Model 090, for 200 watts or less and an electic start) and put it in place of the rectifier. It now keeps the voltage at 14.4 volts. It cost less than $50 and was easy to install. Now I can protect my electical equipment and maybe this will prove useful to others.
