Regulating Voltage on 1989 Force 85 HP

I have a 1989 Force 85 HP outboard. Because the electrical system only has a rectifier and not a regulator the voltage is as high as 17 or 18 volts at around 4000 rpm. I did not realize this until I added a depth finder that also displayed voltage. I went to a local shop that services snowmobiles and ATVs. I ordered a Universal Regulator (Model 090, for 200 watts or less and an electic start) and put it in place of the rectifier. It now keeps the voltage at 14.4 volts. It cost less than $50 and was easy to install. Now I can protect my electical equipment and maybe this will prove useful to others.

I have a 1989 50 with same issue. Voltage is about 16.5 volts What is the manufacturer of the universal regulator? I found a part 01-090-1 Universal Voltage Regulator that has 4 wires (2 yellow, black and red) for $45. Is this what you used?

Thanks

Here is a web link to the regulators. http://www.mfgsupply.com/SnowRegs.html I called the company and they do not know much about using on outboard, no wiring diagrams available. It looks like they have a regulator only that uses and external rectifier and a unit that includes the rectifier. The two yellow wires hook to the stator, red is + and black is -. If anyone has more information please post. I suspect that want2runbetter used the 01-090-1 unit.

Thanks
