I have a 1997 225 ocean runner Johnson and blew the rectifier . Took the old one to the Johnson dealer to purchase a new one. The new Johnson rectifier did not have a purple wire like the old one . When I question the mech about this he told me that this was the replacement and to not worry about the purple wire that it ran back to the switch and was not used anymore. I installed the new rectifer leaving the purple wire not connected . The motor ran fine on the hose and was charging. When I put it in the water it would only turn 4000 RMS. I took it to a Johnson mech not the dealer where i purchased and he told me that it was the wrong rectifer that the purple wire had to be connected. Can any mech tell me who is right since the rectifer. cost me 230.00

Re: regulator rectifier

janvan, sometimes I can say get a new mechanic and other times not.
usually stay with one,or you get opposing opinions.
That said:
I recently replaced a similar rectifier and it did not have the purple wire.I called OMC (BRP)
and was told they did eliminate the purple wire, just tape off the harness side.
Maybe you have two problems/as I don't think a regulator will limit RPM's on a 'BRP'motor.
DHP (not at 4000RPM's)

Re: regulator rectifier

janvan,
I replaced the same thing on my motor (1991 Evinrude) and was told the same by 3 different techs. They were right as I did consult evinrude directly, they elimiated the purple wire and when I hooked the new unit charging was fine, I also paid $220.00 for my unit. I would say you have another problem with your motor or at least check the wires on the new unit and see if you pinched any of them putting it in.
