Re: Regulator

Why would I show a charge on the volt meter of 16 volts @ anything over 3000 RPM. When I turn all the running lights on it will come down to around 14.5 - 15 volts. I think that's a little high, am I on the right track?

Re: Regulator

A loose connection or a battery with not much capasity (light duty or sulphurized), but if it becomes a problem just install a regulater--Bob

Re: Regulator

Hi Laddies,

Can you suggest what sort of regulator might be suitable for this application. And possibly one that might be easy to source in the UK.

I have a similar problem. I renewed all my wiring, changed the battery and it made no difference. In the end I fitted a very small regulator to protect my Radio, GPS and Fish Finder, but I'd really like to fit something in between the battery and the outboard.

Rapair or CDI Electronics part number 194-5279, Mercury #815279-1 this number will cross to about 10 differant merc numbers, here on iboats (sierra) #18-5743 on a pre 92 engine it might take some wire end changes--Bob

Re: Regulator

Snipe, what you are experiencing is common with these motors without a regulator. Do a search of these forums and you will find lots of discussion about the same thing. Unless you are experiencing some specific problems then I wouldn't worry about it. Make sure all the connections are clean and tight and be sure to use a marine battery, not an automotive type.

Re: Regulator

I don't know if this is related, but if I'm cruising steady at say 1800RPM, every once in a while the tach. needle will momentarily jump up and come right back down. There is no speed change, just an electronic impulse surge. This motor is on a pontoon, so alot of slow running.
