Reinell copies other boats?

I was at (one of our few remaining) boat dealers the other day looking at a used Reinell. The salesman said that what Reinell does is finds boats that ride/perform well, then makes a mold of that hull and builds a Reinell based on the other company's design. He told me that the one I was looking at was a Four Winns design.

He also said that, while the Reinell hull wasn't necessarily as good as the original, it was hand laid fiberglass, not just poured into the mold. Come to think of it, that doesn't jive with the first part of his story, does it?

Anyone have thoughts or opinions?

hand laid has nothing to do with a mold... you still have a mold either way. The difference is just how you apply fiberglass to the mold. Either you get a worker to put strips in, or a chopper gun to shoot it in. (and some hulls get both) You could turn a thread of hand laid vs chopper gun into a holy war debate, but neither one is superior by definition. An unskilled worker in either case could be disasterous, and an expert craftsman will have excellent results with either.

as far as hull design, i believe those are copyrighted?
