Any Resin that can be sanded in less than 2 hours contains wax. That's a Guarantee. Bondo Resin sold at the Auto Parts Stores and the Big box stores ALL have wax in them. They usually average about $30 to $35 per gallon. Un-Waxed Laminating Resin averages around $25 per gallon. Fiberglass Mat is Loose strands of Fiberglass fibers held together with a binder. It's typically called CSM Chopped Strand Mat. Fiberglass Cloth is Fiberglass Fibers Woven together at various angles giving them different strengths etc. What you are going to use is a combination of the two. I see it advertised on Ebay Quadaxial Fiberglass Cloth 50in x 6 ft 1pc 2 78 Sqyds 22oz | eBay but have not seen or heard of it being used in boat restoration/building. Maybe ok to use it, I'm not sure. It's just that I personally have never used it or heard of it being used on boats. Typical 17 oz Biaxial Cloth that is used on boats requires 1 gallon of resin to wet out 4.5yds. Your measurements are for approx 8 yds but 22 oz. It will soak up a bit more resin plus you must precoat the wood first which will soak up prolly close to 1/2 gallon so my original estimate is prolly a bit high but I'd guess 4-5 gallons would be close to what you'll need. Another thing to consider is Bondo Resin tends to set up a bit faster than the Laminating resin and is a bit Thicker in texture so it does not Flow quite as well. Just my observations, so take it as you will.

The Quadraxial cloth will work just fine...only be prepared for it to drink resin...

Just for your info, you can look on this website and see the different materials/prices they have to offer...

Most of us use the 1708 Biaxial cloth over 1.5 Ounce Chopped Strand Mat...
I am not sure of the price differences on the Bondo Resin and the different cloths, but you will tend to use more resin with the thick Quad Cloth...although it should be "Battleship strong" when you are done...

BTW, I sent an email to 3M asking whether or not their Bondo Resin contains any wax...as soon as they respond, I will post their answer here...

Like already stated, the glass will work OK, but it has no mat attached to it like 1708 does, so for use with polyester resin you will need to buy some 1.5 oz mat too. This will make your
laminate very thick, costly and heavy. Mat needs to be used with polyesters, but not with epoxy.

i bought this boat for 200 dollars. its been setting since 1995. under trees. the leaves over time stoped up every drain hole.so all the wood was rotton. the motor wood swing back and forth in the transom. the floor well you know. i got home striped it down top cap and all. removed all the wood cleaned it up. havent touched it much since. i been reading and watching videos to learn how im going to do this. it came with a 1975 70 hp evinrude. i built a stand for it. i cleaned the carbs replaced 2 coils that were cracked. and replaced the little plastic universal balls for the spark advance. the motor runs good. but engines is my thing. not just boat engines but all engines. i just like engines. anyways all the seats and every thing else is going to have to be replaced. im going to have a small fortune in this boat when its finished. ill take some pictures and post it so you fellows see what i got. making the stringers is going to be a pain. but iv read and watched a thousand videos. should of done this on fiberglassing hu . but anyways i feel i can handle the stringers and the shape of the floor. the full bottom seems brittle and thin thats why im wanting to build it up. i dont want it to break in half. when it hits a wave.ill se if i can get some pics of it tommorow. hope you all can read this mess im no typer spelling even worse

You have found the best place you could have to restore your boat. Post your pics and we'll have you on the water in no time. I really think there's much better materials for you to use for this restoration.

I used the 3m resin before and I thought it was OK. I did not know the difference back then and had nothing to compare it to. When I finally bought 5 gallons pail of 700 Vinyl Ester Resin from USComposites.com, I knew what I was dealing with. For one, 3M resin is very fast to set and will give you very little window of time to work it out which will end up costing you more money during the project. I will use the 700 Vinyl Ester Resin from USComposites.com to finish my project. Hope it helps
