I am trying to reinstall the outdrive on a 1983 140hp after a bellows and gimble bearing replacement. It is an alpha 1 outdrive that goes on so far and then stops. It looks like the u-joints are hitting the housing. Any tricks to getting it back on?

did you recheck alignment after replacing the gimbal brg.
U joints really cant jam up in the housing , more than enough room.
Is the shifter in full fwd gear.and it the drive in full fwd gear.

Re: reinstalling outdrive

Did you use an alignment tool to check your alignment? When you do this, it also sets the angle of the gimbal bearing correctly. If you don't do this, you are going to have a tough time.

Looks like all three were typing the same thing at basically the same time.

Yep, What they said! ;)

Also, if the u-joints are getting loose and sloppy, they can make reinstalling the outdrive a bit more of a challenge. Might want to think about replacing them as well.

Re: reinstalling outdrive

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I got it in, but now no reverse. I had it all the way forward for the remove an install, and forward and neutral are fine, but no reverse. With it tilted up, I can see the shifter lever turn when it is shifted into reverse, but the prop still spins freely. Any idea what went wrong? Do I need to pull it and try again? Reverse worked before removal.

take your shift cable loose and make sure you can move it all the way in by hand easily, then all the way out it should move freely, if not change your shift cable, if it does adjust your cable by the book and it should work fine

The roller probably missed being between the 3 arms of the shift slide.
