Still having problems with TnT orig problem was up not working down ok, bought a new relay for the TnT up position replaced it
still not working so I swapped top to bottom ,bottom to top now it will go up but not down. Is this a case that possible both relays need to be replaced as a unit? I have ruled out the possiblablity that the plug its self is bad by swapping out the relays I swapped them several times to duplicate the situation and same results. This is on a 1991 Evenrude 40hp
Thanks in advance

Re: Relay problems on TnT

Try swapping the old relay you replaced with the old one you left in place. You may have replaced the wrong relay. Not 100% sure about this motor but on some motors both relays are used for up and down with a switching arrangement using both relays which reverses the + and - connections fed to the motor for up and down.

Re: Relay problems on TnT

Seasport is right. Try the switch. One relay controls up, the other down. If one goes bad, the other will work, and they can be switched in an emergency. However, the system will not work if one of them (even the bad one) is missing. We recommend replacing them in pairs, and keeping the old (good one) as a spare.

Re: Relay problems on TnT

The way it works is that each relay has two sets of contacts - one normally open and one normally closed. When you activate the up switch, say, one relay closes and 12V is fed through the relay to the blue wire - and the green wire is routed to ground through the normally closed switch on the other relay. When you hit the down switch it's the other way around. So if the t/t doesn't work in one direction it could be either relay at fault - either the + connection through one relay or the -ve connection through the other.

Re: Relay problems on TnT FIXED!!!!

Re: Relay problems on TnT FIXED!!!!

First thanks to all that replyed to my problem. I did replace the wrong relay I was under the impression that if the up didn't work than it must be the top relay. I did as suggested and now I have TnT again I cleaned the contacts with a contact cleaner then I replaced the Diaelectric grease on both relays. Every thing is back to norm. Thanks again fot the top notch info. I am now on the boat again.
