Re: Rememberance Day/Veterans Day. Lest We Forget.

November 11th became significant for me on Febuary 20th 2006 when I watched the US flag taken off my Father's casket, folded and handed to my Mother.
He was a WWII veteran stationed in Guam, lived to 83. Like all of them he never really talked much about it.

To all the iboats vets here, A GREAT BIG THANK YOU for your service.

I'm glad you got to see that. It is closure (god I hate that word) on a special life. In any book-Special!

My brother and I got to spread Mom and Dad's ashes, at the place they met, before 49 years of a wonderful marriage.

That was very special to me. Rest in Peace-Mom and Dad!

Re: Rememberance Day/Veterans Day. Lest We Forget.

This is another day that many confuse the purpose of. It is the anniversary of the end of WWI and was celebrated for that for many years.

In more recent years the U.S. changed it to Veterans Day, to honor those that have served and survived. Those who served and perished or have gone to their final reward are honored on Memorial Day.

It appears the Canada's Rememberance Day honors both living and dead.

I cannot explain why it annoys me when people confuse the purpose. All of those who ever served, living and dead, deserve our most heartfelt thanks. We need to focus on the living today, but without neglecting those who made the greatest sacrifice. . . .the ones that the CMH honorees call, "The real heroes".

I thank all of my fellow Veterans for our freedoms and the price they paid to preserve them.

Don't forget that Applebees serves lunch as a gift to veterans today. Come join us there. :)

Re: Happy Veterans Day

My father and I were talking about the wars and how families survived , when the men were off fighting them . He told me that my Grandmother would go off to work every day at the at the military base. What makes it intresting for me was she fixed their military vehicles. Well thats what I do as a trade for the last 20 years. Good old Grama its in the blood. It was cool hearing this as my Father realy never talks much about his past and family. I wish I could have seen her with a wrench in her hand.

One grandfather (maternal) served during WWII with the Canadian army (he was originally from East Pubnico Nova Scotia), in the Highlanders (can't remember the division). He didn't like to talk about it much, but from what I gather he was on the beach during D-day, and served in Belgium for a period too. He confided in one of my uncles (his brother in law) that at one point sometime, somewhere, most of his unit was wiped out, and he had to hide among the bodies to escape the Germans who were shooting on sight (no prisoners).

I would have guessed the Cape Breton Highlanders, but from the sequence of battle that you described, it is more likely the Black Watch. The CBH were in Italy at that time.
The action that you detailed may well have been at Walcheren Causeway during the Battle of the Scheldt. Lots of on-line info available.

The National Archives in Ottawa maintains service records from WWII. If you are interested, send me a PM and I can link you up with the folks who could provide your GF's service records.

I only served 5 years active duty Army(4 1/2 over seas) and am 60% disabled, i wish i was back to 100% to go finish the job with my brothers in arms. but since i can't go back i did the next best thing on veterans day. I took a young soldier (Navy Reserve)who is about to deploy for the first time fishing and told him a million and one tricks of the trade to make the deployment a little easier, why to bring a good stainless steel "D ring" with him instead of a light aluminum one, How to stay warm in sub zero temps.........can never be too prepared, and what ever it takes to bring himself back safe.

This is the first time that I had a chance to read this thread since I posted. I"m not sure why I didn't get updates but that's besides the point. What a great country, both United States and Canada, we live in. I am so blessed to have been born on this side of the world. Thanks to all the Vets who posted and served our countries. Your sacrifice is bar none the greatest you can ask. Thanks for those who posted to honour our heroes. And what a great forum iboats is to let us post threads as great as this.
