Don't you have a safety chain mounted below the winch??? I always keep the chain hooked until the last second and in particular if I am moving the boat.

Yeah my strap broke (actually the threads rotted where it was sewn) early this season when I was reteiving the boat.

Keeps us thinking! Glad yours was NOT a smear!

Bob

Last year I saw someone forget to strap their boat on at the bottom of the ramp. It didn't make it to the top. :) The guy said he barrowed the boat too...

The Saltare is sweet...

Supras were some of the sexiest boats ever to pop out of a mold, IMO.. Especially the late 80's and early 90's models before they started rounding everything off...

I miss my old Ts6m...

Transom straps and safety chain. Don't leave home without them. And especially don't move the boat and trailer without them. :)

Re: REMINDER: check your trailer straps (pics)

That was close.
I have had my winch strap break on my while cranking the boat on the trailer....strap comes flying back and whacks me in the face....ouch!
Another time the strap broke while I was trailering it to the lake. I looked in the rear view mirror and see my stern of the boat bouncing up and down big time.
In the middle of rush hour traffic, on a busy road, I hit the brakes and go and fix the boat...tieing up traffic for 5 minutes while I did it. There was no way I was going to drive to the next block to pull over and fix it then.
Traffic waited, with horns honking but I managed to tie it to the trailer. That was close....

Why are you guys using straps rather than steel cable?

Binds?

What do you mean, binds? I've been using steel cables on our winches for years and years without any problem. Am I missing something here?

Thom

I think there were recent posts about straps/cables in the trailer forum. I definately use straps. I'd rather be whipped in the face with a strap rather than a broken sharp barbed cable. I use a strap and saftey chain combo with transom tie downs.

for small boats, straps just seem easier to use. winches don't need to be large to carry them. also, most straps are rated for more capacity than the small cables. with larger boats, especially those with power winches, cables seem to be the norm.

my little 14Ft. I use a steel cable and when its on the trailer fully I put on the chain whenever I roll it,boat weight with gear is about 900 Lb.

Rope and strapping you might think is a softer smack to your mug when/if is lets go,ether way you go line or cable it is going to make you see stars and yip like the cyotes (Owww-Owww....)

unless you rinse your lines & straps if ya are in the salt, its gonna get eaten, cablels will let youy know when you get a metalic barb in your hand when winching in,allso it last a few more seasons on the water Vs. fabric.

Peace

Idea here..it's been great for my boats, my dad's and my brother's.
#1, use a safety chain.
#2, unload the winch (loosen) when the boat is parked.
Maybe everyone already does that, if ya don't, give it a try. It's much easier on cable or strap, AND the hellacious pull on the bow hook and keel when the boat sits 99% of it's life on the trailer.
