Remote Control Replace/Rebuild?

Hi all, first post for me. So my cables are too short and are kinking so I spoke to a mechanic who was doing another job for me about replacing the cables. He said definitely but brought up the remote control as well. He said that basically it is just worn out and didn't recommend running with it or the cables much longer and I should look for a replacement.

I've never had an older motor so this issue is new to me. Does it seem correct that the control just gets worn out? Some quick searches haven't shown much and what I did find is several hundred dollars. Can these be rebuilt? Should I talk to another shop?

1980 Evinrude 85 V4 control has fast idle lever and trim.

Thanks

Agreed...

the controls themselves dont really go "bad"... the only real wearable part in them is the little plastic bushings...

Take them apart, clean everything, lube it up good with a waterproof non-hardening grease (white lithium is good), install new cables, and good to go!

Thank you both.

I'll measure for cables tomorrow and have at it.

Cheers.
