Remote Control Trim Wiring Question

I have a 1993 50 Hsp Evinrude with a concealed side mount control. This past week, my trim up button on the control arm stopped working. The trim down side worked fine and both up and down worked fine on the controls on the motor and at the bow of the boat.

I assumed it was a bad switch in the remote control. I took it apart and found 3 wires going to the switch. The blue wire was broken where it comes through the hole on the control mounting bracket. It had a crimp connector on it so the same problem obviously had happened with the previous owner of the boat.

I soldered the wire back together and put heat shring tubing around the joint and the trim switch then worked again.

Behind the mounting plate in the boat where the side mount control bolts on, the 3 wires go through the hole in the bottom of the control. (All 3 are bundled together with electical tape around them.) It looks to me that the wire bundle goes in and out a half inch or so each direction when you operate the control to all the way forward and reverse. It would seem that this is an obvious wear point that will eventually fail again.

I put the wiring back the way it was before, but I am not certain if it was right to begin with. The wiring from the switch runs down the side of the control arm (inside) and curves around the bottom until it reaches the hole. My question is, should this wiring move on the back side of the mount when operating the control? Is there a special way the wiring should be ran inside of the control arm so that the wiring doesn't move where it goes through the bottom hole? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

if the wire is being chaffed, then just reroute it. it really does not care where it is routed.

Re: Remote Control Trim Wiring Question

I don't think you can really re-route the wire. The wire comes from the trim switch and is routed through the inside of the control handle. If you look at the bottom of the photo where the handle pivots, the hole where the wire goes through is at the 6 o'clock position. Here is a photo to better explain the routing of the wire. The red circle at the bottom indicated about where the hole is where the wiring comes out of the control handle and through to the back side of the control handle mounting bracket.

The 3 wires are taped and/or shrink wrapped where it goes through the mounting bracket on the boat.

I just would like to know if the wiring should be moving in and out through the hole. I realize this is one of those situations where it's difficult to tell what I am talking about without actually seeing in in person. I appreciate any comments you have. Thanks
