Remote (Divorced) Choke Conversion

I am in the process of installing a 4.3L V6 Gen+ longblock with vortec heads. My original motor was a 92 non-vortec before it spun some rod bearings. I am reusing my Rochester 4 barrel Quadrajet carb on the newer style vortec intake manifold. However, there is no mounting location or stove for the remote (divorced) choke. What are my options for conversion? I see some kits on the web (http://www.flyingfishcarburetors.com/quadrajetsuperchoke.htm) but they appear to use the same mounting area on the manifold as the old choke did. I live in Montana at an altitude of 4000 ft and it is not always the warmest early in the morning even during the summer so I assume I will need a choke. Has anyone else faced this problem?

I have an 87 Merc 4.3, rochester. It has an electric choke. Heated element inside the choke adjustment. Run the wire to an ign controlled hot wire. You don't say what package you have but an electric should work.

My carb has a remote choke instead of the electric choke. It is a coil that mounts to the intake manifold. When the manifold get warm it expands the coil and the arm attached to it pushes the choke closed.

Re: Remote (Divorced) Choke Conversion

I looked at that kit. However, my new intake manifold has no holes for mounting the actuator. I may be able to fabricate a custom bracket/shelf that is secured to the carb via the rear studs but I need to see if there is even room. The new intake is pretty flat and the carb barely fit to begin with. It would be better if I could find a kit that mounted to the carb itself. Any thoughts about stealing the electric choke parts off a factory equiped carb and retrofitting them to mine?

Thoses are the same kits as mentioned before that mount to the intake manifold. The problem is I have no place to mount them.

At the bottom of the page there are 'divorced choke conversion' that have the arm and an electric element as well as just the heated adjustment cover. Not looking at your carb, but a junkyard may help get the different type choke mounted. (just the choke mechanism, NOT the entire automotive carb.)

Re: Remote (Divorced) Choke Conversion

I have emailed all the places that are selling these conversion kits and they tell me they will not work with my intake manifold. They suggest buying a new carb which I fell is pointless given the one I have works fine. I guess I will try wiring the choke off and see how that works.
