Remote Filter Found

Have found a number of hidden items since I bought this SkipJack. A manual hand operated fuel pump under the deck, an Electrical Fish behind a Flybridge Panel and now some type of remote filter bolted under the Starboard Deck about two feet from the Engine. With my limited knowledge I guess it to be an Oil Filter or an Oil/Water Seperator Mount. Clarification please.

My intentions were not to use it. But I was hoping it was a Remote Oil Filter. If it was, there was some hope that it I might be able to install another one.

Re: Remote Filter Found

Thanks Bond-o. Just did not know if the year and size may have something to do with it. It ends up looking like I have a Mercruiser 5.0 1998-2001. With the other info I have gathered I think it is probably a 1998. I will start visiting some local autoparts stores. This is one of those upgrades I hope to do when it is time to change the oil and oil filter.

Does something like this need to say "Marine" or "Mercruiser" Remote Oil Filter?

They don't have to be MARINE, but they do need to be good quality kits. I've seen the housings that replace the oil filter on the engine crack on some of those cheapy kits.

That is NOT an oil filter housing. Look at the line on it. If it would have been oil, it would have needed a lot larger hose to move the oil thru. All that was for is fuel. Probably for the old OMC engine

Agreed. After Bond-o mentioned what it might be, we started talking about getting a Remote Oil Filter.

Out of element on what is Quality. Mercruiser the best way to go then or do you have some Auto Name Brand Filters you can recommend?

Re: Remote Filter Found

If you go over to Merc Parts Express at http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp then go to accessories >zip > dealer > engine accessories > Mercruiser > Remote oil filter kits > MCM Remote Oil Filter Kits you will see a list of the different kits.
I would guess your engine (Just by looking) was in the 91 to 96 vintage and would take kit number 35-806329A 1

I've never installed an automotive type, so couldn't tell you what's good or bad, but the Merc Kit has all the stuff to make the job easy to do and it fits........ Especially if you knew what year engine you had.

Re: Remote Filter Found

Although the Mercruiser Tag above the starter ismissing and I have not been able to locate the Engine Serial Yet, my guess on the Engine to this point is 1998-2001. Is there anything you you saw of my engine that would indicate that it is not 1998-2001? Thanks for the link and the advice.

Re: Remote Filter Found

I was just guessing, I remember there were pictures of it, but I didn't go looking for them.
There is a kit for it also.
If it was me, I would want to try the older style kit. The one for the newer model has the filter sticking up in the air above the housing while the older model has the filter hanging down under the housing. The new model makes a heck of a mess when trying to remove it. The lines are under the housing and you can't really get anything under it to catch the oil. You can punch a hole in the old filter and let it drain, but it still makes a mess.

Re: Remote Filter Found

Having seen Lyndy's boat, it's understandable why he'd want a remote filter, it's almost impossible to get to the filter on it, the top of the engine is even with the floor. Getting the adapter on won't be a picnic but will sure save a lot of swearing in the future. How ya doin', Lyn?
