New engine (454 bravo one) with 25hrs. Bought it 4 yrs ago. Previous owner claimed engine was fresh with only 150 hrs, I thought the oil pressure was low (less than 10 psi at idle, 25 psi at 3000 rpm) but made it through the summer 2009 as I babied the boat around never more than 3200 rpm. Had the engine rebuilt in 2010, now after only 25 hrs the oil pressure is less than 10 psi at hot idle, but about 25 psi at 3000 hot cruise. 50 psi cold cruise. I started racking my brain and looking at what might be going on. I pulled the oil filter and cut it open and didn't see any metal in the outside folds of the filter...I did see some metal flakes in the middle of the filter!!!! I then discovered the hoses were backwards and the oil was flowing backwards through the filter!!! Damnit!!! Motor makes no noises, run great. I know the motor is going to have to come out eventually, but if I stick 2 qts of Lucas in there and 5 qts of Valvoline 50 wt and the oil pressure comes up about 10 lbs across the board, can I make it through the summer if I take it easy on the throttle. I was using AC Delco oil filters without drainback valves so maybe that reduced the wear. I guess the lesson is when you buy something used, you have to check and make sure everything is hooked up right. I've never had a boat with remote oil hoses so didn't think twice about the routing.
