realized that growling sound was not u-joints, but bearing that goes around the input shaft inside the "bell housing" (similar to gimbal bearing)....having trouble removing input shaft to change that back bearing (referring to the solid shaft that goes forward toward the engine)....removed all the snap rings, but the thing is in there pretty solid..is there a good way to pull this shaft out w/o damaging the splines? according to my manual, the shaft should just slide out toward the back...maybe it's stuck to the bearing? there is rust showing on the back of the bearing..

please help

thanks,
Scott

I just knock them out with a mallet. Right after removing the bellhousing from the back of the engine.

fired up the engine tonight after work and the bearing on the input shaft in the bellhousing is DEFINITELY the source of the growling. got everything cleaned up so that I can see that ball bearing cage........just unclear on how to get at it. my clymer book sucks. need to find a seloc I guess

Neither Seloc, Clymer, or even the Volvo manual will give you many details on changing those bearings.
Yes, you need to pull the engine to remove the bellhousing....... Unless you have some wild magical powers.
