Re: removal off shaft from block of 8hp johnson sea horse

Had the same problem on a 4 horse Evinrude. It can (and was for me) be a real bear to get the drive shaft loose.

I finally ended up using alternating PB Blaster and heat once I got the lower unit off. Even that wasn't enough and I finally used a metal drift to strike the crankshaft end while the drive shaft was held by a wood vise.

In my case the motor needed a complete rebuild before it could be used anyway, so I really had nothing to lose. Depending on the reason you are trying dis-assembly, you might not want to get that drastic.

Someone with more experience will probably come along, but one thing you might want to try; I read somewhere about drilling a small hole in the mid section so that you can invert the motor, spray in PB Blaster or other solvent of your choice and hopefully get the shaft loose. It didn't work for me, but might for you.

If you were to try this, you'd obviously want to be very careful to drill where you're not going to damage the shift rod or other components. It also entails plugging or patching the hole somehow afterward.

Good luck,
Gary
