Re: remove a shift cable from an Alpha One Gen 1 out drive

duped... success! ... With a little variance - I did as you said, and no headway, however, I blocked up a bottle jack, placed a 2x8 between it, and the bottom of the upper unit, placed three 2x4's on edge between the top cap, and the gimbal housing, jacked it up (I think the rear end of boat was getting a little light in the trailer - LOL)and it finally broke loose! It did break off the end of the shift lever (not the shaft), but if I can't replace that, I have another gimbal housing that may fit. If not, I'll get another one. Between you, ktbarrentine, and the great videos from Eric 3.7 LX Alpha 1, the job got done. I would like to express my grateful thanks, to you guys. I could not have gotten this far without your help. I'll shoot some photos later, and post them. By the way, the gimbal bearing is still stuck on the shaft! More PB Blaster - Thanks again, gentlemen - J.P.

Good to hear. I suppose it's good and bad that you got the gimbal bearing out at the same time, but for that to be rusted on there, guarantee your u-joints will need to be replaced. Rust means trash can for them. Shift lever is no big deal, replace it with new, as well as the shaft seals. And while you're spending money, get yourself an alignment tool with gimbal bearing driver for your new bearing. Failure to do any of those things, or use of any used parts will have you doing this whole project again next year, or sooner.

Duped - Yep. I agree wholeheartedly, old parts, or the wrong tools are a recipe for disaster. Do it right, do it once. You know as well as I do, it's safety first, when you're on the water, and a mechanical failure, can turn into a tragedy darned fast. - I'm sure I'll be back with lots more questions (big and little) as I delve into this project. - Thanks again! - J.P.
