Re: Remove an outboard ...

Recently bought a 70 johnson, we manhandled it into my van. I but the block to the rearof the van. I did the 4x4 over the garage exposed ceiling rafters. Used the come-a-long and it was a 1 person job getting it out the van.

I had to use a long chain thru the engine lifting tab because the hook on the comealong was to big but this was ok b/c then I used the rest of the chain over the rafters to hold it in place. Then moved the comealong over 5-6' and remove my siezed 48 hp from my flat and hung it on the ceiling rafters. I moved the boat to the 70 and installed it.

All by my lonesome. I'm new to the area so no friends here to help, not to say a neighbor wouldn't help if I asked, very nice neighborhood.

Now I have a 48 hanging from the rafters. I will try to part it out, It was flooded by Katrina. I think the lower unit should be ok and it has a ss prop.

Re: Remove an outboard ...

Well, my neighbor and I were able to lift it relatively easy but I could not believe how hard it was to remove the steering cable from the motor mount. I think that when the furniture was replaced, the previous owner must have re-routed the steering cable because the angle of approach was very ackward. I have found what I believe to be a much better route but I won't be until I replace the transom and remount the motor.

Side note: I tried to remove the lower unit as suggested in a different thread because I thought it would be easier to put on a stand. Unfortunately I was not able to loosen one of the bolts easily (slipped and slightlt rounded an edge) and was not able to get a socket on it. Now that the motor is off, hopefully I will be able to get better access.
