Remove B23 engine from 270 drive.

Hello,
I am trying to swap engines from a busted-up hull into a good hull with a bad engine. Rather than take the outdrive off to get at the clamping ring, I have tried to unbolt the engine rear plate from the intermediate housing. This has gone all right, except that I can only separate the engine from the intermediate housing about half an inch.
As I remember (I haven't worked on one of these in years) the drive shaft with U-joints has a splined shaft at the engine end that just slides on.
This engine has been sitting for a while, and it may be that the splines are rusty and don't want to move. But maybe this is an impossible approach, and I have to remove the outdrive.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Did you remove the lower shield?

Yes, otherwise the flywheel would be caught behind the shield.

Come on now, you didn't think the "easy way" would really be easy did you?

Well, I know that the alternative is to pull the outdrive, with all the possibilities of the pivot bolts and steering helmet nuts causing trouble, and the absolute guarantee of a painful hour or so installing the exhaust and shaft bellows.
So far I haven't done anything that wasn't going to have to happen anyway, and I just want to make sure that I don't break something trying to get the driveshaft out of the flywheel coupling. As said above I don't REMEMBER that there was a bolted flange or a circlip on the splined shaft. But then I can't REMEMBER where I put my wallet yesterday. And my cell phone the day before...

There shouldn't be anything else in the way. Maybe the splines of the shaft are rusted to the absorber (vibration damper). If that were the case, the engine would tend to spring back toward the flywheel cover after you let go of the pry bar. Can you get some penetrant down there?

I have loosed mighty squirts of "weasel ****" down where I hope if penetrates and lubricates. I read some glowing reports of something called "Kroil" and bought a couple of cans. I think it's somewhat better than WD 40, not as good as ATF mixed with lacquer thinner.

Today's project was to rig up the hoist again. It's an A-frame, mounted on the front towing points of my pickup. Because the head is off the installed engine, rigging is not an exact science. In any event, got it lifted, but still doesn't want to come loose. The latest idea is to lift (the engine) and separate (the engine from the intermediate housing), as much as possible, and then bar the engine over, and hope that helps the splined drive wriggle free.
The next question will be how to rig it up so that the "new" engine can be fitted on, shaft coupled, etc, without going crazy. Doing if from the other side (fitting the outdrive onto the shaft, with the engine in) is no big deal. Dunno how it will be, other way around.
