would it be better to remove the boat from the trailer or not before glassing in stringers transom and deck?
I am not going to be removing the cap because everything is accessible.
the trailer has bunks that seem to be solid. im just wondering if the hull may be flexing inward i dont want to glass it out of shape.

Re: remove from trailer?

you can build a temporary support system tied into the trailer, or build a cradle and pull it off, the key is just keep it supported fully during the work. With the cap still on that will help but support the hull along each of the chines and outside edges and you should be OK

Re: remove from trailer?

I removed my top cap and mine is just sitting on the trailer. I noticed that the hull keeps very good shape on mine especially when I am keeping my weight in the keel of the boat. I am planning on installing stringers and bulkheads and tabbing them in before installing the top cap...I may regret this, but I was surprised at how well the fiberglass keeps its shape. The center section of my boat does not move at all when I walk in it. I still think the "correct" way is to build supports to keep it in perfect shape, but if I still had the top cap on I wouldnt worry a lot about it.

you will see lots of flexing with the strings out.

IF...it is a bunk trailer......and the boat is properly supported.......your good.

bunks can be deceiving.

what would be the best way to support the hull if it was off the trailer. or maybe i should ask where should the supports be?
i am a carpenter so building something isnt a problem. just hopefully cheap

here are some more pics

The cap will help keep things together.and the trailer will help keep things straight on the hull.
I have a GT-150 uncapped right now.that's when focus is on keeping things supported.your in good shape.good luck.

I agree you can see the hull flex as you walk around, but mine only flex's around the outside. The center part of the boat or from where it sits on the bunks of the trailer in does not....Just curious if yours is the same. My bulkheads going from the stringers outward will not be put in until the cap is set back on.

mine seems to flex more in the center or around where it sits on the bunks
but i did lift the front of the boat off the trailer to see if it would "unflex" and it seems to be ok

Re: remove from trailer?

you can build a cradle to support it, like this

I built mine upside down but you could build it right side up with measurements and achieve the same thing...support at each chine and the outside edges is optimal

transferring from trailer to cradle was not hard since my cradle height is the same as trailer it slides right over using a winch/come-along

you could also support on the trailer if you do not have need to do any trailer work, build extra bunks with leg structures under the boat anywhere it feels like it need the extra support, it is a lot harder to move around this way though

Re: remove from trailer?

just make sure that the bunk system is fully supporting the hull with out bending the glass or point loading......if the boat is bending the glass at the point of contact with the bunks.......run an extra 2x6 on each side of the plaining surface (on the flat) to take some weight off the main bunks
