Re: Remove lower unit from 8HP, need help
I have seen a number of those little twin-cylinders with rusted crankshafts, resulting in the driveshaft being stuck in the crank.

HOW TO DEAL WITH ABOVE SCENARIO: Don't be surprised if gentle pursuasion results in the unit coming off without the driveshaft. The waterpump pin may nick the pump housing on the way out, but it shouldn't hurt anything else. Your next issue is removing the driveshaft. My recommendation would be to remove the powerhead to offer better access to the driveshaft. You can then put a pair of ViceGrips on the shaft, mid-way up and tap it out of the crankshaft without buggering up the shaft's bearing surfaces. If all goes well, replace the driveshaft into the lower unit, replace the base gasket on the powerhead and re-install on the exhaust housing. You're now ready to continue with the waterpump service. BE SURE TO THOROUGHLY GREASE THE DRIVESHAFT SPLINES PRIOR TO REASSEMBLY!!

- Scott
