ok, just attempted to install my lower unit 5 times after installing new impeller... each time it either gets stuck in gear when in neutral or gears do not engage at all...

i am tired of trying to trial and error this one... any help?

Put the control lever into forward.

Put the gearcase into forward.
(when forward gear is engaged in the gearcase, and you turn the propeller clockwise with your hand, the clutchdog will ratchet)

Jiggle and wiggle the gearcase to align the water tube, and shift rod splines, rotate the flywheel clockwise a little to align the driveshaft.

It helps to have a friend to turn the flywheel.

If the lower unit is seated against the leg housing, the spline is engaged properly. Did you check the shift lever coupler on the forward side of the lower unit? Make sure it is engaging the shift rod properly.

Hmmmmmm ?

Yes you can do it with one person, just turn the prop shaft with your 4th hand while trying to lift the gearcase into place.

Are you sure you had the gearcase in forward, and not reverse?

Perhaps someone previously made an adjustment to the shift cable, to compensate for not having the gearcase in sync when they did the last impeller change. ??

You may have to disconnect the cable, place the gearcase and shaft into forward, install the gearcase, make sure it will shift into F-N-R, then attach and adjust the cable.
