Remove motor using a automobile floor jack??? Anyone try this method?

After hearing peoples thoughts on the transom and knee braces I will pull the motor and replace the transom. While I have the transom out, I will have the knee braces welded and beefed-up with extra aluminum plates. A local boat shop uses a welder that they claim has lots of experience with welding aluminum boats.

I do have one question about the removal of the motor (johnson 112 hp). I will built a moveable motor mount (as seen online) and use a automobile floor jack (secured to a 2x4) to lift the motor off the transom (with a couple of people balancing the motor on the bowl of the jack). I also saw a youtube video of this technique. My question is....using a jack to lift from the bottom of the motor (the vertical fin behind the prop) will this damage this fin? The whole weight the motor will be placed on the fin using this technique. Is there a better way to remove the motor? Thanks.

Just my 2 cents, but I would not go that route. I just got done pulling a 90, and putting a 150 on my boat. ALL of the weight is in the powerhead, the leg weighs next to nothing in comparison, so it is extremely top heavy. It should be supported from the top

Straps, a cable come-a-long and a tree or well supported garage cieling The motor is extra TOP heavy. I wouldn't try to balance it. Or three good people can lift the motor and lay it down. I do mine manually with friends Keep in mind the motor probably needs to be slid over to clear the steering cable out

Or you can rent an engine hoist like I did for $25-$35 for the day depending on where you are. That's your safest bet and what I did after considering the same methodology as you.

can i just carefully lay the 112 two stroke motor down on its side on a soft pad? Will this damage the motor? If so I will hoist it using a come-long and place it on its side on the garage floor. Where on the motor do you hook into with the pulley, or can i just use a heavy strap to wrap around the powerhead section?

Thanks for all the input.

Your motor probably has a lifting eye for using a hook. I made the assumption you have a 1995 and looked it up here...see part #71. This works better than straps in my opinion. You should be fine laying it on it's side carefully.

That was very kind of you to look my motor up, thank you. Indeed it does have the lifting eye and I will use that to hoist it.

I used a jack to adjust, and raise my 140, but like others said, top heavy.

I used a Harbor freight hoist mounted to the top of my garage (not to a single beam) then backed the boat into the engine and lowered.

Final adjustment done by floor jack.

I also used ropes wrapped around the base of the powerhead, then wrapped ropes around that and the tilt tube, then lifted on the ropes from the top.
Worked great, even had the engine hanging like that for a few weeks. :)

The motor can be laid down in just about ANY position since no fluids to leak out (Except the gas in the bowls). I have placed them on their back many times.

Actually I gave up on the lay it down method and built a wooden motor stand ;)
