Remove oil injection or not?

I have a 2001 Johnson ocean pro that has given me nothing but problems. My latest problems include skipping, low/no oil alarms going off at idle, loss of fuel prime, sputtering, etc. Also, the engine doesnt seem to be using as much oil as it should. Ive had 2 places check it out, and they tell me nothing is wrong with the oil injection, that its a bad tach, etc. I took it to another mechanic today and he wants to remove the oil injection, and swears by it. Any advice? What are the pros and cons of injection vs mixing?

If I ruled the world , gas stations would have a premixed fuel pump just for boats.

Its one less smelly oily item in the boat.
On a new engine it might make sense but when other parts are starting to wear out already...

Try using a 6 gal tank of pre-mix, at least you can then suss out the other problems without wondering if the vro is causing it.

The oil injection is not causing your problems.

Look in Engine FAQs for advice on how to decide and what to do about oil injection.

If you take it off obivously you have to mix your gas but you know it is right and that small bit of work is way better than a power head rebuild.

Thanks for the input. What might the problem be if not the oil injection?

Will the oil injection kill your powerhead? Not likely. If you forget the oil or don't mix enough will that kill it? Yes.

Sounds like you have a fuel delivery issue. You've had 3 people check it out. What are the pressure & vacuum numbers they got when they tested the pump?

its a 2001 johnson ocean pro 115. I replaced the powerhead 1n 2005 due to the motor not getting oil. i dont know what numbers the mechanics got, but the place i took it to the other day said the compression was fine. He wants to remove the injection and replace the fuel pump, clean carbs, etc.

Does anyone else have advice on this topic? Any advocates of the removal? Experience?

loosing prime means you have a leak somewhere in the fuel system, find that leak and I would imagine a good bit of your problems will go away.

The Tech needs to find the problem first, then decide if you would like to remove the VRO pump. What is the compression, spark test, fuel pressure, fuel leaks, air leaks. The engine will run fine with or with ol injection. If the injection system used, it must be serviced.
