I want to replace the prop on 85HP Force outboard. How do I lock the motor so the shaft doesn't turn when I turn the nut holding the prop on. It looks like I need to turn wrench to the left to remove the nut. Is that so? The prop has a spline shaft. Does that mean it does not have a shear pin.

Hang on to the prop with a rag so it doesn't cut ya and turn the nut counterclockwise. No shear pin with a splined shaft.

as above but remove the split pin first, then the nut, remove prop, give the splines a good clean to remove the old grease, check there is no fishing line or gunge around the seating washer, regrease with a waterproof grease (keenol/aqua lube ect, re-assemble in reverse order and fit new split pin(important)job done!

incidently, the prop is seated in a rubber bung insert, this acts like a shear pin in the event of hitting something hard, if you can rotate the prop on the bung without moving the shaft then the rubber has worn and needs replacement,(cheap) regards mark.

Thanks everyone for your help. I plan to change the prop tonight. I don't know what a split pin is. I guess I'll find out.

Split pin is a cotter pin that keeps the prop nut from spinning(Coming Loose) on the shaft. The prop nut goes on and the pin goes through the nut and a hole in the shaft to secure it. You'll see.
