Remove shift shaft before bearing carrier?

I have a 1992 Mariner 90 HP. Tried removing the bearing carrier but was having some trouble. After reading the manual again I noticed that the shift shaft removal section is before the bearing carrier removal. Does this mean that I have to remove Shift shaft before I remove the bearing carrier?

Re: Remove shift shaft before bearing carrier?

Nothing to stop you. The shift shaft is splined and inserts into a 3 position cam in the very front of the LU. The shift shaft moves the cam to different positions for FNR where each detent is at a different distance from the pivot point. This distance change allows the cam follower in the prop shaft to move the shift shuttle between F gear at the front and N in the center and R gear toward the rear. The contact is spring loaded and the cam follower is pointed like a bullet.

Pop the 2 screws on the bearing carrier and with a wheel puller, with ears pointing out, put the screw on the end of the prop shaft and the fingers up and into the LU and pull it out. You can then remove the prop shaft with the clutch dog and cam follower intact.
