removiing oil injection??

i have a 1992 mercury 40 hp with oil injection and i have been reading some posts on people removing the oil injection due to possible oil pump failure resulting in a blown engine. Should i be concerned about this and if so, is it recommended that i remove this? thanks

The one you'll hear from is the one that had a powerhead failure and blamed the oil pump whether it was the fault or not. You'll never hear from the other 999,999 people that have motors that are running just fine. Go to bed. Get some sleep. Dream about all the beautiful women that'll be after your bod when they see that babe-magnet of a boat you have with a terribly reliable oil injection system. (They love that technical stuff. )

Hi Crownline,<br /><br />The worst model or brand to have problem with the oil injection system is the Evinrude of the mid '90s. My brother in law had this bad experience with his 1996 Evinrude 25-HP - twice the engine seize up because of no oil lubrication from the pump, lucky he was the engine was still cover by warranty, the dealer changed the block and put a new pump, one month later same story, dealer made the same fix but at this second repair they installed an improve VRO oil pump, they were right it was improved compare to the two first pumps - one day only by trolling while fishing on a lake it emptied more than half of the oil tank in two hours and choke the engine solid with the plugs fouled solid and cylinders fill with oil unburnt. Last fix got rid of the stupid pump and since with premix at 50:1 never had problem. <br />But may be Mercury didn't have those problems with their VRO system.<br /><br />Smokey

I had the injection on my 95 150 ocean pro removed for that reason.I trust MYSELF to mix the fuel .I have not screwed that one up ever so I would rather depend on ME.Charlie

thanks for the replys guys...so im assuming that i shouldnt waste time or money removing the oil injection? just wanted to make sure beucase ive read a few things on the oil pumps failing (not specifically mercury) but i didnt know if it applyed to all engine mfg's.

I have never read a post dealing with a blown motor due to lack of oil IF - BIG IF - - the owner made sure that the proper amount of oil was added when fueling up.

I would disagree Solittle. These forums are full of instances where clogged carb jets have killed one or more cylinders on a premix engine despite the fact that there was oil in the gas at the proper ratio.

jimd you are absolutely correct. My comment was intended to be limited to the VRO/non VRO question. I had one go due to water injestion.
