hi guys....im doing a 2005 30 footer with twin bravos.

the gimbal rings are toast....(actually broken).

i intend on removing them and replacing them (the gimbal rings)

the seloc manual i have says i need to drill holes in the side of the outer transom plate to remove the clamp screw and lock nut.

is this true???....if so...then how did the manufactures build the thing in the first place !!!
i know i should throw this seloc book in the burn pile....but its all i have at the moment.

thanks

Re: removing a bravo gimbal ring

EDIT: Sorry, thought it said gimbal bearing.

The method of drilling the two holes is a "hope this don't leak" method, and I will never do it again. Leave that for doing to your own boat, but if you are going to do the job for someone else and expect to say it won't leak, then remove the transom shield, then you can get to the nuts, and seals to do the job right.

Here is the real OEM manual for that outdrive http://www.4shared.com/document/7ctpcLpn/Service_Manual_28r.html

Re: removing a bravo gimbal ring

thanks don.....the method of drilling sounded stoopid to me....

so i am guessing that the cap on the top of the outer transom sheild is hollow and allow me access to the nuts.

the motors are out right now....(being rebuilt) so its all clear back there for me to remove to outer transom plate.

....another quick question for you.......what kind of bolt heads are on the exhaust "Y".....they look like torks.....but i cant seem to find the right socket size.

again....i really appreceate all your help.
thanks.......and if i ever get back down to your neck of the woods....i owe you a pound of really great coffie !

Yes, it's hollow, look at section 4B of the manual.

Just a standard 3/8 or 7/16" 12 point socket from any socket set. nothing special.
