Can you just cover over it with the new number?

Oh no the guy who did it must have been blind... the numbers stretch almost 2 foot long by about 8" high

What are the numbers made with? Paint or Vinyl?
If paint, you can use some stripper, Acetone or lacquer thinner...
If vinyl you can use an eraser wheel on a drill motor...
If the surface underneath is painted, whatever you use may damage the paint...

Try going over it with a dry erase marker. then wipe it off. No I am not kidding. Try it out.

If it is a Sharpie marker, use denatured alcohol. Sharpie ink is alcohol based and will dissolve with denatured alcohol. Denatured alcohol is not strong and won't hurt your paint, gelcoat, or alum. either

Isopropyl Alcohol comes in multiple strengths:

Try what you have at home, then go higher % if it doesn't quite take it off......

And the good news is that Wal-Mart carries all 3. There will be a large display of the weak stuff and then over in an obscure shelf space you will find the 90% for about $3 per bottle. That is less than half what you will pay at the paint store.

Re: Removing a hull # written in permanent marker

sorry so late to respond
I tried the dry erase marker, rubbing alchol 99%and a menards paint thinner.. all with no luck. So as we were getting frustrated I found an old can of Wooley paint thinner in my dads barn so as a last resort we applied it on with a rag .. and off came the numbers. it was almost like a model car paint that they had used..
So thanks again for all the help

probably a paint pen. It's basically model paint, but looks just like magic marker if it's applied thin enough
