hi folks, got me the boat listed below. i'm needin to remove my engine and i have a couple of questions. i have the oem manual, says to remove the exhaust pipe and the water line leading to the t-stat. can i get away w/o removeing them. the pipe is very close to the back of the engine. guess w/o removeing it i would be concered about the engine moveing back and contacting the pipe once the engine is loose. i've tried to see about removal but man, i still ain't seen the bolts that hold that pipe on. seems like it's pretty hard to go get is what i'm sayin i guess. i almost have the block ready to remove minus this.
another question is i have no place to hook a chain to on the front of the engine. head is off. had no lifting eye in front anyways. whats the best way to secure to the front of the engine. head bolt holes? thats my neighbors idea. and i don't like it as i already have one cracked headbolt hole which is the reason for the engine removal. seems it'd be nice to have a eye somewhere so the force is shear on whatever bolt? but am wondering if there are alternitives.

looks like i'm into the long repair.. :(
if ya want pics. i recokon i can post one if that'd be helpfull.....

hopeing to save this ol girl...(my 72 trisonic that is)

My 69 160 with the same engine has lifting rings. I can't say exactly what holes they are bolted in without looking but I'd be glad to take a pic and send it to you.

Re: removing a IL6 ?

i got the what i assume is the oem liftin ring at the back of the block. i didn't have one on the front. engine isn't original. head is off. engine is pretty striped down now.. now i'm in search of another point to lift from, from the front. i'd be interested in hearin about where yer front liftin ring is located at thunderroad. i did check parts cat. and oem service manual and clymer( ) no pics of lifting points or part numbers to discover where the ft. liftin eye was at....

after re-readin about the exhust pipe. perhaps it means i should be removeing the exhust tube(rubber) between the riser and exhaust pipe... maybe....

thanks TR. i just talked with my machinst guy. guess he thinks it'd be ok to use the headbolt holes. so at this point unless i can come up with another idea. that's where i'm headin right now....
TR. i'm guessin the eye mounts to the head as i see no where to mount anything to on the block itself.....your pic will tell, thanks agian....

I had the same problem. What I did was put 3" nylon straps (webbing) around the motor and connected those to my hoist... Let me see if I have any pics...

Nope... No pics. I used 2 straps (one for the front of the motor and one for the back).

Good luck! It's LOTS of fun! He, he!

This pipe Here,..... Stays in the Boat......

And,... The Water Line to the T-stat,.... I'd Think that you'd Already have Pulled that from the T-stat housing,+ folded it back up'n under the Transom, to get it Out of Your Way,....... When you were Pulling the Head.........

Where are you disconnecting the Front of the motor,.??....I'd pull the lag bolts that hold it to the Hull.....
It sounds like you've got it pretty Stripped.....
You're only lifting a few hundred pounds,.....
A Dockline off your boat,... Looped around, thru the Front Motor Mount is a Great Lifting Point......Double it in a loop if your concerned about it's Strength,.....

I never did figure out Which headbolt Hole was #13,...... Is it a Corner Bolt,..???...

Re: removing a IL6 ?

thanks thunderroad. that's about where i thought the lift ring should be. even went and looked at my head at the machinst shop. he stil has it.

dukesfin. that was an idea i had too. with the straps. sounds like that did work for you. that's incorageig as an alternitive.
bondo, i still don't get it. know what i think i'm gonna do, but don't get it. remove the exhaust pipe, i thought item 1 is the exhaust pipe. i can see how it would stay in the boat. no way to go unscrew it. item 5? is that the part i'm supposed to remove? it don't look to much in the way and yep the hose going to the t-stat is folded back out of the way and i don't see any reason to remove it either. yep, i plan on removein the lag bolts into the boat. the ft motor mount looks like it needs to go to move the engine forward. i need maybe 6" fwd to clear the top side of the hull in the back. so a line would work ay? i wondered if i could get away with that. i think perhaps i'm going to heavy duty if i line will do it. or as TR said, only 1 3/8 bolt.
bondo, yep, #13 is a ft port headbolt hole. it's not stripped, but has a crack thru it in 2 places.. welder assures me it's fixable.....
thanks for all the info too peoples. specialy the pic. i always wondered where the ft lift ring went. knew i didn't have one but didn't care about that till now.....now i care....thankyou friends..... :)
