Removing air cover and adjusting idle jets on lake

This is my first attempt at adjusting the idle screws so I want to check a few things before it attempt this. The motor seems to idle a little rough and seems to be running very rich at idle. I want to try adusting the idle screws before I attempt a carb tear down and cleaning.

1) I believe that it is OK to remove the plastic air cover (sound attenuator plate - see attached pic) when adjusting the idle speed screws on the carbs. These six screws on the carbs are somewhat hard to reach/adjust with the cover on.

2) I believe that the idle screw adjustments should be done with the motor running at idle speed and the motor in gear. I envision myself having someone steer the boat as it moves slowly along in the water while I adjust each of the six idle screws. I can't readily tie up the boat to a dock or keep it in the trailer at the dock to do the adjustments because of congested situations where I use the boat.

3) I hope that I will be able to hear/feel the affect of adjusting each idle screws so that I can set each one properly. I am somewhat concerned that I will have a hard time sensing the change/affect on one cylinder (out of six) when adjusting a jet.

4) I believe that one turns the idle screw until it idles best and then turn the idle screw out 1/4 turn to be a little on the rich side.

Thanks for any confirmations/corrections/tips on the best way to adjust the idle screws in my situatuon (i.e., on open water/lake)?
