Hello everyone. I am looking for information on the removal and reinstallation of a mercruiser 3.0 motor. I have to fix a broken starter bolt. The information I am getting is that it is pretty straight forward. I am a little confused on the alignment. Cant seem to find much info on that. When the motor is just removed and put back in is alignment necessary? If so, where could i find details on the finer points of alignment and where would I get the tool that is required. Thank you all for any help.

Re: Removing and reinstalling Merc. 3.0

I just replaced a broken starter bolt in my Sylvan this summer. I was able to use a 90 degree drill (Makita) and a left hand drill bit (turns opposite to standard drill bits). Once the drill bit went thru the broken bolt into the space above it, the left hand rotation spun the threaded part of the bolt out. I now have a piece of threaded bolt about 1" long with a 1/8" hole in the centre of it hanging on my key chain. You might want to check if you have enough clearance in the bilge to do this before pulling the engine. I figured I had nothing to lose if this didn't work but it did and saved me quite a bite of work.

PS. A mechanic friend had the drill bits. Came with an easy-out set he had.

You can get inexpensive sets from northern tool or harbor freight. Left hand bits are a very handy thing to have.

Thank you all for the info. Which gaskets, seals or o rings would i need to have when I start this?
