removing boat carpet

Whats the best method for removing the carpet from my fiberglass boat?.One more question,this might be off the wall,I have vinyl padding that is faded but not cracked ,is it possible to paint the vinyl instead of replacing it?

I work in the auto industry building car seats, when we have a scratch or scuff on a seat we will re paint the area on a leather seat, but we have to replace vinyl seats. paint will permeate the leather and move with it, vinyl-the paint stays on top and cracks when the seat gets wrinkled. It may work for your own use, if your not overly worried about a perfect appearance. Check with a auto supply store they may have special paints fo vinyl.
