Removing brownish stain from hull,,,what works best?

I took my boat to a different lake for the first time and when I pulled it out there was a brownish film that stained the white hull and sides. I tried some wax to remove it but did not come off. My hull used to be nice and white but it has a brownish or yellowed stain from the water line down. What can I use to clean this back to a white finish??? Thank you.

try "Magic Erasers" found in the grocery store cleaning section. I had the same problem after my boat sat in the water for a week while we were camping.Works wonders.

just about any bathroom cleaner will work. soft scrubb,scrubbing bubbles.

Well... yes to toilet bowl cleaner, but it has to have Oxalic acid in it. Also known as "Slimey Grimey". You can also get oxalic acid at the marine supply stores.

You'll just spray it on and wait an hour or less. The brown algae will be gone. What's left is oil residue and can be washed off with your favorite detergent.

+1 for the Magic Erasers. $3 for two of them is a steal when you realize how well they work. Be careful though, they do disintegrate rather quickly.

I get the same stuborn stain...never had luck with magic eraser/bathroom cleaners... i found out the same as gstanton that a cleaner with an acid in it works the best...no matter what you use it seems the grim goes on easier than it comes off..and the longer the brown film stays on the harder it is to remove....my neighbor used rubbing compund with no luck then tried "the works" toilet bowel cleaner and it came off with one wipe. Attwoods brand "hull cleaner" available at Walmart.....works great for the scum I get anyway. $7 a bottle....another member here cuts it 50% and said it works just as good.

I use "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. Just spray it on and let it sit for about 5 minutes and then hose it off.

Brown stain gone.....

I second this. The Wal Mart Hull Cleaner works beautifully.​

I put it in a spray bottle and spray it on, let it sit for about a minute, then hose it off. For stubborn stains I will use a scotch brite pad to work it in. Don't let it dry prior to rinsing it off. Also flush it good with water, to include the trailer.​

I would put a coat of wax on after using it. Don't really know if you need to, but I do because the brownish scum doesn't build up as fast with a fresh waxed surface.​

A hull cleaner product, Seasense at Wall Mart, many different brands. All contain acid. All work well.

I tried the scrubbing bubbles and a few other bathroom cleaners and they did a good job of knocking off the easier stains but some elbow grease was required. My neighbor suggested using Staybrite's "EZ-On EZ-Off". I bought a jug through amazon as the local walmart didn't carry it as i'd hoped. I used a spray bottle to apply it and just watched the stubborn heavy stains melt way. Did the entire boat in less than 30 min and it looks like new. Be sure to wear long sleaves and don't apply if its very windy as the product contains acid and will burn upon contact with the skin.
