Removing Clipper Assembly from Johnson.

Hello, I have a 1971 Johnson 60hp. Just going through getting it ready for the water and noticed after the last idle the clipper assembly started to smoke and now looks like it is damaged. Some people say that it can be removed and is not essential. What exactly does it do and how would I go about removing it? I now have a Motorola "amplifier ay?" not an OMC is the stock would have been. Any ideas?

High voltage "spikes" will destroy the amplifier. The clipper "clips" those spikes to a safe level. If you have no spikes, you don't need the clipper. But you do have spikes. Everybody does.

It seems that these days, aftermarket makers of amplifiers say to remove the clipper circuit. I don't understand that. Maybe they do.

Do you know what would cause a clipper to fry?

Nope. Possibly somebody reversed the battery cables??

Alright so the motor is running awesome now. Only problem is the clipper now. As I mentioned before the motor was not run in 4 years and I didn't take a close look at the clipper before but after running it a few times the silicon inside of the clipper has melted and there is a wire fray visible. I have the motorola power pack which I've been told is newer and possibly may have some type of clipper inside of it. What would be the best course of action to take from here. Should I spend the 230 and risk having the clipper melt again or did it just melt from being old and worn out?

If it was MY motor I would just remove the clipper and be done with it. But when I did I would make sure ALL my battery connections on both the mtr and battery were good and clean and tight. There's a story behind this but to long to explain here.

I'm sort of a newbie with outboards. What exactly should I do with the wires once disconnected from the clipper?

Just take one clipper wire off at a time. Any other wires that are there, leave there and put them back on the terminal board with the screws leaving wires on mtr in the same position you found them. Then take the clipper off of the mtr.
