We have finally gotten the lower unit off that 1987 8 hp johnson by using steel wedges. The top of the water pump housing broke in the process. We have pulled the power head and now have a powerhead with a seriously rusted drive shaft sticking out of it. All our efforts to remove it have failed, heat, PB blaster, beating on it etc.<br />What do the expets do to get it out????

Re: removing driveshaft from crank

Heat, beating, PB Blaster, harsh language, are all tools of the trade Bill. Ya' might try this. Since the engine rotates clockwise, sometimes a notch gets formed in the splines to the splines in the crank. Try chucking the driveshaft up in a vise and work the block counterclock wise and back and forth and so on. This may losen it up. Try this with the block hanging down so PB Blaster can be applied to the driveshaft/crank connection. Worked once for me. Keep us posted and good luck.....last resort...red sticks. :-0
