Removing exhaust housing - stuck at rubber mounts... [EDIT: Problem solved]

I?ve been searching thoroughly through this excellent forum but finally I have to make a new tread.
This is my first post ever!
Ok, here goes:

I have a 1983 Johnson Seahorse 4.5hp [J5RHCTA]
My project is to fully dissemble the outboard, change worn parts, gaskets, impeller, repaint, new decals, and put it all back together. It?s my first outboard maintenance, but with the manual and patience it has been going well (I LOVE IT!).

Now I am stuck at dissembling the exhaust hosing (see pictures). The rubber mounts [A] just won?t budge. It seems like the housing would be lifted straight up with rubbers in place, but then the steering rod will hit at .

What should I do? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I've never had one of that kind apart, but the pictures certainly look like you could just pull the bottom part rearward to clear the steering shaft, then up. No???

- Nope! It can be bent an inch or so in either direction (as it is only fasten with the rubber mount), but not enough (and the rubber mounts would be squeezed and even more stuck).
Thing is, you could also slide the steering rod up but then, again, it would stop when hitting the bottom "plate" of the exhaust housing - at B in the picture.

I don?t get it..?!

Won't they swing apart sideways until the parts will clear each other at B. Possibly only one way as the housing for the shift lever might limit the movement the other.

Cannot see any other way of doing it. Even been and looked at my similar 6 hp.

Your problem may be that the rubbers are now stuck.

Why do you want to separate it anyway?

Your problem may be that the rubbers are now stuck.

If I really bent it hard I might be able to slide the rod up and when that is gone I could go for the rubber part. But I really don?t think I could go all the way up, besides it doesn?t "feel" right.

I want to get all parts free so that I can sandblast & repaint...

Anyone else?

Upon studying the parts schematic, I just don't see any way possible except to swing the lower end aside and lift it up. There's nothing else to dis-assemble.

Impossible!

You cannot bend & slide the rod up. I can do it a little bit, but then it is definately stuck..
I think I am back at trying to figure out a way to get the rubber mounts off first. Maybe if I try to compress one of them to the side and then the other I might be able to pry away...?

Anyone who has changed rubber mounts on a small Johnson engine??

On some of the smaller engines there are 5 anti vibration rubbers,not sure about your motor but look up between ex housing and transom clamp assy.
I may be wrong on this model !

Yeah you?re right. The 3 lower ones are easy to remove - just to unscrew the clamp. It is the upper two "vibration rubbers" that I just cannot wrap my head around - how to get them off.
I wonder if the steering rod is welded in its upper fitting or if it?s possible to unscew also?

My next try is to compress the upper port rubber with the help of iron jaws, then try to fiddle the other one out.

Problem solved!

I just kept pushing the exhaust housing upwards until it hit the plate (at B) and then slightly bent it to go the last bit. The rubber mounts were really stuck which made it tricky but doable.
