I just picked up a 1987 eagle 371 thats been in dry storage for 3 years. It has a 140 hp on it. I know the gas is bad that is in it. I shoot some starting fluid into the air box to see if the motor was good and it tried to start. So how should I go about getting all the old gas out of the carbs and tank so I can try it with some fresh gas. I am trying not to have to pull the carbs off and rebuild them.

starting fluid was a bad idea...some premix fuel would be the way to go. clean the carbs and do a spark check, spray some 2 stroke oil into the carbs before starting. then replace the water pump impeller, gear case oil, clean/check the t-stats. then see if you can get it to crank.

why was starting fluid a bad idea? I used very little, just enough to see if it would try to fire up. I did prime the oil tank first. and where can I find specs on this motor?

because on a 2 stroke motor the carbs feed fuel across your crank shaft, this is why you mix oil in the gas, the starting fluid would wash away the oil that is on your crank shaft and cause a dry bearing situation which will cause damage and greatly shorten the expected life of your motor. so lots of 2-stroke oil into the carbs to soak the crank. never use starting fluid on a 2 stroke, use mixed gas.

If you have to use starting fluid on any motor, better find out what's wrong with it first. Unless it's a diesel and it's -35 * out. LOL.
