We need a bit more information... Which manual are you using, what is the serial number of the engine? What exactly do you mean by 'ignition'? Are you referring to the switch in the control box or the complete ignition system from the engine?

The ignition housing with distributor on it. The motor is a 1974 Mercury Thunderbolt 115hp with powertrim. I am using the selco manual

The dissy can be removed be taking the drive belt off, removing the 3 mounting bolts and sliding it down.

Bin the seloc.... Terrible manuals. Actually it's an insult to manuals to call it a manual... Fire-lighter? Knee-pad? Bog roll? Really they're not much good at those either... :(:(

Get a genuine manual... Plenty on ebay real cheap.

You may have to remove the flywheel to get to the distributor housing bolts. The drive belt to the distributor is on the flywheel so be careful there.
You obviously have to remove the trigger wires to the switchbox, remember to draw a little pic and record where the brown, blk and wht wires go.
The spark plug and coil wires screw into the distributor cap, dont try to pull them off!
The coil wire pulls out of the coil and off the spark plugs themselves.
What is the problem with the distributor system?

one of the wires from the trigger has only a two or three strands holding it on to the distributor also the two other wires are frayed and about to come apart
