I will be changing my water pump this week, and was wondiring what dropping the lower unit entailed. I have searched the site, but don't find much. Could some one walk me through it. Also I lknow alot of motors have a tube where the water pump circulates the water. Mine does not come out the cowling. Any Ideas.

Randy

Hi Randy, welcome to iboats. Bubba's pictures pretty much says it all about droppin the lower unit. The large picture showin the bell crank screw is to release the shift rod. Be careful not to turn the shift rod. It is set to a specific height while in neutral. It may turn a little while dropping the lower unit but don't screw it down all the way tight.

Your engine is not equipped with a tell tale or "pee hole" as it's commonly referred to. You can search the forum using the "Search" button at the top of the page for ideas on how to install one. There has been many threads on this topic.

Here are a couple suggestions for you:

If your are going to replace the impeller, condiser replacing the whole pump. You can get a kit for this with a new housing and stainless impeller cup.

Replace the t-stats as well if you don't know the last time they were replaced. These are located in a small oblong housing at the bottom of the exhaust housing on the engine. Little hard to get to but can be done.

Keep us posted on your progress and any troubles you may find or run into.

A couple of tips the shift rod screw is fun getting back in ,tape it to your screw driver. Replace the woodruff key if your shaft has one .

You may not need the whole kit. Wait until you get it apart and can examine the pump housing for wear. Lots of those older motors have virgin pump housings with zero wear - they don't get used much. **** 90 bucks away if you want, but usually the housings on older motors are in good shape. IMHO.
