Removing lower unit drive shaft........

Hi, i have a 1974 Mercury 500 (50HP) 4cylinder, last year i replaced the water pump impellor, and water pump gaskets, as well as the prop shaft oil seal..<br /><br />I am still getting some water into my gearcase, so i want to replace the driveshaft oil seal.. How would i go about removing the driveshaft from the gear case to change the seal??? <br /><br />Any help is greatly apprciated....thanks again- Neil :)

take the w/pump, off like you did and then take two screwdrivers and pry the base up and the seals are in the base--Bob

hey, thanks, i managed to remove the base... now how do i get that seal out of the base??? i tried prying but its really stuck? <br /><br />also, are there any seals underneath the bearing that have to be replaced?? and should i both to replace that bearing or not? it seems to be fine. <br /><br />thanks for the help -Neil

big-merc;pry them out ,Very carefully ,and take note the way you have to install the new ones(2) they go back to back,also is the shaft seal surface pit free if not get a sleeve kit for it,otherwise the new ones will be shot in no time.<br /> To remove the drive shaft you need to pull the the bearing carrier assy.,prop shaft,reverse gear to get to the nut under the pinion gear so it can be pulled out of the the case.if you have a manual it will explain it in detail.If not i suggest you get one if your going to do the job.GOOD LUCK
