Removing Lower Unit from engine

How do i go about removing the lower unit (alpha 1)from my 1991 4.3L. I do now believe that after all of your postings, I do indeed have a cracked block and want to pull my motor. . Whats in volved with this process. . looks fairly straight forward other than the lower unit part???<br /><br />Thanks

go to amarket.com ]amarket.com and look under help repair. I have not done it but I think this is what your looking for.

If you have enough room in front of the engine you do not need to remove the drive. I did it in my boat. Unbolted the mounts and pulled the engine forward till it cleared the splined shaft. But this depends on the room in front of the engine.

that weasnt much help. . but thanks for the try. . also another question, this motor is like a 91. . I have a rebuilt 86 4.3 sitting in the garage ready for a van i was building. . would that be a perfect swap for this motor or no. . . or i also have a ford 302 from late 80's??? from another boat i have in good running condition with a jet drive. . would this 302 be able to bolt up to my alpha 1? thanks guys

thanks mlslocks. . i do have about 6 inches in front of the engine before the gas tank. . and if i have to i can move that really easy. . I an looks for any options i may have and may yank that pos this week. .

That engine you have built and ready to go will work fine.......provided it is the model with the roller lifters and cam in it??? If not it may still work ok, the rollers work better with the higher RPM load of a boat engine. Use brass freeze plugs too and you should be fine. Are you running in salt or fresh water.

CC2B,<br />You CAN remove the engine without removing the outdrive, But Don't.... It's Allot Easier if you pull the outdrive 1st.... AND, you Can't Propperly Install the engine with the outdrive in place.... AFTER the engine is installed, you MUST Align the Gimbal bearing,+ Coupler... If you Skip this, You'll have Major Problems....<br /><br />Get yourself a Manual NOW..... You Really Need It...<br /><br />The outdrive comes Off with the removal of 8 nuts.... The 6 on the top of the drive,+ the 2 at the backends of the trim cyls.... Super Easy....<br /><br />The V6 you have may work just fine... I wouldn't use the Ford... Parts are Tough to find.. they didn't build allot of them,+ That was along time ago.... And they were used with the Mod.1 outdrives, Not the Alpha1s... the Flywheel covers Don't have the Right Bolt Patterns.....<br />Navyguy is right... the roller cam is a little Hotter cam... And sometime in the early 90s, they started the Gen+ motors, that have a third shaft, just above the cam.... <br />IF All is the Same, Use the motor you Have.....<br /><br />Hope this Helps.....

cool. . thanks for the advice guys. . the garaged 4.3 is a rebuilt 1986 so correct me if I am wrong but they should be the same gen 1 motor???? I am on vacation for a few days so I can keep posted this coming weekend on my progress
