Hello everyone. I have a 1979 Searay with a 898 mercruiser and it seems my water impeller is shot. (I didn't winterize-HOW STUPID). I removed the outdrive from the boat. Then removed the 5 nuts holding the lower unit to the rest of the housing. Removed the proppeller, but couldn't find anything in the housing that I could remove.
Unfortunatelly the lower unit is still steadfast to the rest of the housing.
Can someone please tell me what I should do to be able to separate the lower unit from the upper one.

go get yer service manual in the adults only sticky for your rig.
in the s/m you'll find where all the bolts are...
i'm assuming a 1 drive for '79...
remove trim tab thru hole in upper. underneath the trim tab is one more cap screw. then 2 nuts underneath the vent plate that are visible . 2 on top of the vent plate that are visable, and one in the ft by the shift shaft. so. 2 cap screws. 5 nuts..

Thanks a million. I downloaded the manual for my boat( all 1.6 Gigs of it) and nothing in there about separating the lower unit. Could you please be a little more specific about the trim tab in the upper unit. I didn't see anyhing like that. The 5 nuts are off.
Thanks again

I'm putting the outdrive back together (attaching the lower unit to the upper one) and noticed there is no gasket between the lower unit and the upper one. The sales clerk at the marina told me there is no gasket in between them. Can that be? What is it supposed to keep the water from coming into the lower unit?

there is no gasket but there is a quad ring seal. (basically a special o-ring) that needs to in between the upper and lower oil passages.
